Freedom & Independence

Our right to protest at sea has been cut, undermining our proud history of having our say. The GCSB is being empowered to spy on New Zealanders and our sovereignty is being diminished by asset sales and secret trade deals. These assaults make it clear: it’s time to reclaim our independence and our democratic freedoms.

Our democratic values and independence are another defining characteristic of New Zealand. The responsibility is on all New Zealanders – including our own government – to uphold the core tenets of freedom, democracy and independence. Yet it is our own government that is taking these rights from us.

When voting rights were won by women, New Zealand became the first nation to embrace universal suffrage. Freedom to have our say through protest is at the heart of our defining successes, such as our nuclear-free status. Yet that very right to protest at sea has just been cut. This ban is a fundamental erosion of New Zealanders’ rights and was introduced at the request of foreign oil companies. At the same time our government has overhauled our internal spy agency, the GCSB, empowering them to spy on New Zealand citizens. Our sovereignty is also being diminished by asset sales and secret trade deals.

These assaults make it clear: it’s time to reclaim our independence and our democratic rights and freedoms.

Our Freedom and Independence is being undermined by:

  • Banning the right to protest at sea.
  • New powers of state surveillance against New Zealand citizens.
  • Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement – a secret trade deal which hands our national sovereignty to foreign companies.
  • Partial sale of public energy companies diminishing NZ ownership of these vital assets.
